If your once-chiseled jawline is beginning to fade, surgery isn’t your only option!
While not everyone develops a full-on double chin, sagging is inevitable. Around the jawline and jowls, this loss of definition adds years to your appearance—even if you weren’t particularly chiseled to begin with. Kybella jawline contouring provides you with a targeted method of sculpting your chin and dissolving the impossible-to-target double chin fat.
Why You’re Losing The Definition in Your Jaw and Jowls?
Lost jawline definition isn’t a simple matter of body fat. Make no mistake, if you have weight to lose, your jaw and neckline will be less defined. However, there are a variety of factors that contribute to sagging skin and the chin fat most often referred to as a double chin.
- The natural aging process: As you age, your skin’s elasticity and firmness gradually decrease. You also lose bone density. Both factors cause your once prominent jawline to recede.
- Weight gain: From pregnancy to hormonal weight gain, gradual weight gain, or a lifelong struggle with weight. The more body fat you have, the less chiseled you’ll be from the neck up.
- Genetics: How you age internally and externally is directly related to your genetics. Genetics can skip multiple generations but look to your family for clues to how you may age.
What’s the Difference Between Jowls and a Double Chin
Often referred to interchangeably, jowls are primarily skin, and a double chin is primarily subcutaneous fat. Fat cells can bulk up underneath the chin in those who aren’t overweight. Or in those who’ve only gained a minimal amount of weight. A double chin can even form during pregnancy and remain once pregnancy weight is lost. That said, the more body fat you have, the more likely you are to have a double chin.
Some struggle with both laxity and subcutaneous fat. Thankfully, you can use Kybella for both jawline contouring and dropping jowls.
Why Do I Have Jowls if I’m Thin?
Obesity is a contributing factor, but aging is the primary reason jowls form. As we age, collagen and elastin production slow, leading to skin laxity. Laxity is compounded by lost bone density as we age. And of course, the lifelong side effect of gravity. The end result is lost definition along the jawline.
Kybella injections are a targeted method of permanently dissolving fat cell pads. Even if you’re at a healthy body weight, these cells exacerbate skin sagging. With Kybella, skin laxity remains, but your jawline droops less as there are fewer cells weighing it down.
For those who are overweight, injecting Kybella eliminates this excess fat.
Why Jowl and Chin Fat Are Challenging to Target?
The jowl and chin are notoriously resistant to traditional weight loss methods such as diet and exercise. Even if you successfully lose weight in other areas of the body, your chin fat may remain. Or if the definition in your face remains pronounced as you age, your jawline skin may sag. Regardless of weight or facial definition, your neckline may be an area you’re self-conscious about.
Although there are over 60 muscles in the face and neck, few workouts target these smaller muscle groups. Even with targeted jaw, face, and neck exercises, it’s challenging to eliminate fat in these areas.
What Is Kybella?
Kybella is a revolutionary injectable treatment designed specifically for the chin and jawline. It contains the naturally occurring molecule deoxycholic acid. Unlike a dermal filler that’s designed to plump, Kybella targets, dissolves, and absorbs fat cells. It achieves this without harming any other tissue or cells. It’s a 100% surgery-free procedure.
How Is Kybella Administered?
Kybella is a multi-session aesthetic treatment. One session is not enough to stimulate gradual results. Each session takes approximately 20 minutes. A topical numbing agent is applied before we begin, so the treatment is completely painless.
Once you’re numb, a series of 20 to 50 micro-injections are administered, spaced 1 centimeter apart. If jawline contouring is your only objective, you may need closer to 20 injections. The larger the treatment area, the more injections are required.
It will take 2 to 3 sessions, spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart to achieve maximum results. Results will gradually improve starting between 4 and 6 weeks.
What If I Miss a Kybella Session?
During your Kybella consultation, we’ll estimate how many sessions you’re likely to require to refine and sculpt your jaw. The larger your fat cells, the more likely you’ll require 3 treatments.
You aren’t likely to see results after 1 session. If you go longer than 4 weeks between sessions 2+, the results you achieve will be sustained, they won’t reverse. However, you may need to start back at the beginning for optimal fat cell loss. Without completing your sessions, there’s also a greater likelihood that your sagging and double chin will return as you gain weight.
If you complete all sessions, results are likely to be lifelong. Since Kybella dissolves almost all of your chin’s fat cells, the results are long-lasting. If you gain an excessive amount of body fat more treatments may be required.
Is Kybella Right for Me?
The only way to determine if Kybella is right for you is to schedule a consultation. We’ll assess your health, medical history, and aesthetic objectives. If for any reason Kybella isn’t right for you, we’ll discuss other options for jawline contouring. We may also suggest a combination of aesthetic treatments to firm, lift, define, and restore your appearance.
Kybella may not be right for you if:
- You’re mid-treatment for other injectables or aesthetic therapies.
- You have cosmetic surgery planned.
- Your skin or the injection area is inflamed.
- You have problems swallowing.
- You have a bleeding or blood clotting disorder.
- You’re breastfeeding, pregnant, or plan on becoming pregnant.
- You’re on prescriptions that may interact with Kybella.
Does Kybella Have Any Side Effects?
Kybella is safe and effective for most, has no downtime, and requires minimal changes to your daily routine. The most common side effects are redness, mild pain, bruising, and swelling. These symptoms peak 24 to 72 hours post-injection and fade significantly over the first 5 to 7 days. Swelling and sensitivity can last 2 to 3 weeks.
Serious side effects are rare but can occur. Contact us immediately or seek emergency medical care if you experience:
- Excessive bruising

If we determine that Kybella isn’t right for you or you want to take a multi-pronged approach, we may suggest Morpheus8.
Morpheus8: Revitalize with Microneedling
Morpheus8 combines two powerful aesthetic modalities, radiofrequency and microneedling. This FDA-approved treatment provides state-of-the-art body and jawline contouring, firming, tightening, and skin resurfacing. It’s effective for non-surgical double chin removal and can be used on the neck, face, and other areas of your body.
A total of 3 to 5 treatments are required, spaced every 3 to 6 weeks. Maintenance is required every 12 weeks for ongoing anti-aging benefits.
Radiofrequency
Also referred to in the skincare industry as “RF”, radiofrequency sends low-grade concentrated bursts of energy into the deep tissue layers of the skin. This helps the body remodel existing collagen and elastin and stimulates new growth of these anti-aging proteins. RF also permanently dissolves fat cells. Although bursts of energy penetrate your skin, you won’t feel a thing.
Microneedling
Morpheus8 provides next-level microneedling, utilizing 0.5mm to 8mm thin pins to penetrate the skin. The depth is determined by the area of the body being treated and your aesthetic objectives. This fractional treatment activates the body’s natural healing process, to tighten and tone skin. It also stimulates collagen and elastin. Microneedling isn’t pain-free, but we ensure you’re comfortable.

Can I Use Both Kybella and Microneedling?
Combining these two treatments for jawline contouring may be an option, but they need to be spaced out accordingly. If your primary objective is to eliminate fat cells under the chin, Kybella may be all you need. If you also have neck creases, Morpheus8 solo or combined with Kybella may be the best option.
